Chinanews, Zhangjiakou, February 4th, title: Reporter's Notes: Looking back on Chongli in ten years

  Chinanews reporter Chen Lin

On February 4, on the first anniversary of the opening of the Beijing Winter Olympics, Chongli, which was named "advocating etiquette", once again welcomed a large number of media reporters.

At this time last year, as one of the important venues for the snow events of the Beijing Winter Olympics, many reporters watched the live broadcast of the opening ceremony of the Beijing Winter Olympics at the Zhangjiakou Mountain News Center in Chongli.

On a return visit a year later, the former mountain news center has long been turned back into a hotel.

The hall is full of ski lovers carrying ski equipment.

At the gate, there are buses to and from the high-speed rail station and the hotel to pick up and drop off tourists.

On the ski coach bulletin board, more than 70% of the coaches have obtained international certificates.

In the local ski field, coaching foreign tourists is not new.

Chongli, located at the intersection of the North China Plain and the Inner Mongolia Plateau, was once one of the poorest areas in China.

In the early years, the locals described it as "one road in the whole city, without traffic lights".

The longest snow storage period of about 150 days has allowed this small town to be "snow hidden" in the mountains for a long time.

The changes started in 2013.

In November of this year, the Chinese Olympic Committee officially sent a letter to the International Olympic Committee, nominating Beijing to bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics. Beijing will host the ice events, and Zhangjiakou Chongli will host the snow events.

Since then, Chongli has received attention both at home and abroad.

At the National Two Sessions in 2014, officials from Zhangjiakou in the Hebei delegation received a lot of attention from Chinese and foreign media.

The following year, at the same venue, the reporter still remembers a Zhangjiakou official sighing, "Zhangjiakou has never received such attention."

In July 2015, Beijing and Zhangjiakou won the right to host the 2022 Winter Olympics and Winter Paralympics.

An official in Chongli also said, "It pushed us onto the world stage all of a sudden."

It was also from then on that we went into Huangtuzui Village, Chongli, and interviewed Liu Suying, who opened a "farmhouse".

Many years later, I still remember her transformation from hating snow to loving snow, and how she looked at the newly built two-story house and worried about too many guests.

Since then, while we have paid attention to the preparations for the Beijing Winter Olympics and the construction of Winter Olympics projects, we have also paid attention to the changes in the lives of local people.

As a result, figures such as Xie Ting, who has transformed from a ski resort security guard to a ski coach, and Zhao Chunxin, whose whole family is engaged in work related to the Winter Olympics industry, gradually "walked" into our news works.

Chongli here has also withdrawn from the list of poverty-stricken counties ahead of schedule and completely lifted itself out of poverty.

The ice and snow industry has gradually become a local pillar industry, and tourism has changed from "one-season tour" to "four seasons", and more and more people are directly or indirectly engaged in the ice and snow industry and tourism services.

In the selection of various tourist destinations at home and abroad, this small city is often on the list.

More and more tourists from home and abroad come to travel and ski.

The title of Chongli by various media has also quietly changed from "small town" to "Snow Country".

We have also gradually become witnesses from recorders.

After a year, we walked into Chongli again and witnessed the first ski season after the Beijing Winter Olympics.

There is a new ski craze here.

As one taxi driver in a new-energy car put it, it's "the busiest time of the year".

The Yunding Ski Park and other places that once held the Winter Olympic Games are even more lively.

It is only after getting closer to understand that some tracks have already lowered the difficulty and serve more ski lovers.
