Around nine months after the death of a Hertha fan, the alleged perpetrator is brought before the court in Berlin.

The public prosecutor's office in Berlin has accused the 24-year-old from Rostock of causing bodily harm resulting in death, as a spokesman for the authorities announced on Wednesday.

The trial before the capital's district court is scheduled to begin on February 24, it said.

The 24-year-old is said to have hit the Hertha fan in the face so hard on May 19, 2022 after the soccer relegation match between Hertha BSC and Hamburger SV in Berlin that he fell to the ground unchecked and hit the back of his head on the asphalt hit.

The 55-year-old suffered a severe traumatic brain injury and died a few days later in a hospital.

Wanted with identikit

At the time, the police were looking for a suspect with an identikit that had been created on the basis of a witness statement.

Finally, the 24-year-old was identified as the alleged perpetrator.

On August 3, 2022, the Rostocker was initially taken into custody, but according to the Berlin public prosecutor's office, he is now free again.

According to the investigation, the Rostocker is said to have confronted the victim on the day of the crime at an intersection in front of the Olympic Stadium from a car - because it allegedly prevented the onward journey.

Then the 24-year-old is said to have got out of the car and struck.

At the time, Hertha BSC reacted to the man's death with great dismay and expressed condolences to the family and relatives.

At the extraordinary general meeting at the end of June there was a minute's silence for the man.
