American basketball star LeBron James shirt sold for $3.7 million

A shirt worn by American basketball star LeBron James sold for $3.7 million at auction yesterday, five times the previous record for one of his shirts.

The "record" sale received remarkable attention, as the 38-year-old Los Angeles Lakers star is set to become the NBA's all-time leading scorer.

Sotheby's auction house in New York sold the shirt worn by "The King" in a match with his former team, Miami Heat, in the 2013 league final, when he beat the San Antonio Spurs in the seventh game to crown the title.

It broke the previous record of $630,000 for a James jersey worn in an All-Star Game in 2020.

Michael Jordan's 1998 Major League Finals jersey with the Chicago Bulls, which sold for $10.1 million in September 2022, is considered the highest-valued item.

The shirt of Argentine legend Diego Maradona, in the historic match in which he used his hand to score the winning goal and win the title, was sold for $9.3 million at Sotheby's in London last year.

And James needs only 178 points to surpass the record of Lakers legend Karim Abdul-Jabbar of 38,387 points, which is one of the most unbreakable individual achievements.
