On 28 November last year, Årjes took a break from his role as SOK chairman after being informed on the same day that he was charged with sexual harassment.

He has denied wrongdoing all along, but now still chooses to let the timeout turn into a permanent solution.

Årjes, 56, is leaving his post and SOK is now looking for a new chairman.

Heavy records at stake

"After a period of absence from board work, I have informed the election committee that I choose to leave my position.

The last few days have been a trial and after careful consideration, and out of respect for SOK and my family, I have come to the conclusion that the best thing is for the organization to choose a new chairman.

The selection committee will thus begin the work of finding a new chairman for SOK", says Mats Årjes in a statement to TT.

"Due to ongoing legal proceedings, I have no further comment to make."

Thus, the three heaviest positions in Swedish sports will be replaced during the spring.

In addition to the SOK, the Swedish Sports Confederation (RF) and the Swedish Football Association (SvFF) must also elect a new chairman after Björn Eriksson and Karl-Erik Nilsson respectively announced their resignations.

Larsson Acting

During Mats Årje's break, Anders Larsson, chairman of the Swedish Ice Hockey Association, has acted as acting chairman of the SOK.

He will have that role until the regular annual meeting on April 20, when a new chairman will be elected in two years.

"We in the selection committee have started the important work.

Our affiliates will be given time to nominate candidates.

We will inform all member associations in writing about the process," says the election committee's chairman Patrik Tengwall in a press release.
