The American football team Buffalo Bills announced on Thursday afternoon, Swedish time, that Damar Hamlin's, 24, condition has improved significantly in the last 24 hours.

"Women have made remarkable progress in the last 24 hours," Buffalo wrote on Twitter.

However, Hamlin's condition is still critical, but the club writes that from a neurological point of view he appears to be without injuries.

Damar Hamlin collapsed in cardiac arrest Monday night after taking a hard blow to the chest while tackling Cincinnati Bengals player Tee Higgins.

Breathing tube in the throat

Later Thursday evening, Timothy Pritts and William Knight, doctors at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center where Hamlin is being treated, provided an update on the 24-year-old's condition.

Hamlin gradually woke up Thursday night after being sedated — and he was able to communicate in writing.

He still cannot speak as he has a breathing tube in his throat.

- Last night he was able to follow commands and he even asked which team won the game, says Pritts according to AP.

A doctor then replied the following:

- The answer is you, Damar, you won the match of life, says Pritts.

The game between Buffalo and Cincinnati was suspended and it is unclear when or if it will resume.

"Long and tough" days

The live NFL game was followed by millions of television viewers.

Paramedics started Hamlin's heart, while shocked players from both teams cried and surrounded the medical team.

Dorrian Glenn, Hamlin's relative, said doctors restarted the 24-year-old's heart twice, first on the field and then again at the hospital.

Doctor William Knight praises the quick help Hamlin received when he collapsed.

- The last three days have been long and tough.

"He's made quite a remarkable improvement," Knight said.

Buffalo was scheduled to practice on Thursday for the first time since Hamlin collapsed and is scheduled to face the New England Patriots on Sunday.
