US rally driver Ken Block has died after a snowmobile accident.

This was confirmed by his team Hoonigan Racing Division on Tuesday morning.

"It is with the greatest regret that we confirm that Ken Block died in a snowmobile accident," the team said in a statement.

Block was 55 years old.

Block became internationally known through his "Gymkhana" videos.

The high-quality productions feature spectacular drifts and stunts filmed around the world.

In everyday racing, Block was on the road in various rally championships.

Block had been traveling near his home in Utah.

According to the local sheriff's office, the snowmobile landed on the extreme sports star, who succumbed to injuries on the spot.

He leaves behind his wife and three daughters.
