Bengt "Bengan" Johansson, Handball

Death:

8 May 2022, Halmstad.

"Bengan" became popular as the national team captain for the Swedish men's national team when between 1988-2004 he led the team to 13 medals, four of which were gold.

The merit list also includes four SM gold medals as a player, three with Hellas and one with Drott.

He is described as an incredibly warm person who was a pioneer with inclusive leadership.

- It's not just handball.

He has been a forerunner for many sports leaders.

He opened the door for inclusive leadership and showed the way, says Stefan Lövgren, who was part of the "Bengan boys".

Börje Salming, Ice hockey

Born:

17 April 1951, Kiruna.


Death:

24 November 2022, Stockholm.

He came from Kiruna in the north to Gävle and Brynäs - and from there took the step to the NHL.

Börje Salming spent 17 years in the world's best league, 16 in Toronto and one in Detroit, and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1996 - as the first Swedish ice hockey player ever.

He is one of Swedish ice hockey's greatest players of all time and was named one of the six best players of the century in 2008, when the international confederation, IIHF, celebrated 100 years.

- A fantastic person with both feet on the ground.

Despite all his great successes, he always cared about his fellow human beings, there is a greatness in that, said Håkan Loob after the tragic announcement that Salming had passed away.

Sören Boström, Bandy

Born:

26 October 1947, Fagersta.


Death:

31 August 2022, Fagersta.

Sören Boström is considered one of Sweden's best bandy players of all time.

The midfielder made his debut in the A national team in 1973. Eight years later, he was team captain in the Swedish national team that broke the eleven World Cup, and 22 years, long Soviet World Cup gold streak.

During his career, there was another World Cup gold and three World Cup silvers for Boström, who represented Västanfors IF and Västerås SK.

Ingvar Oldsberg, Sports journalist

31 March 1945, Gothenburg.


Death:

10 February 2022, Gothenburg.

Ingvar Oldsberg began his career as a sports journalist and football commentator and worked for many years for SVT.

During the first half of the 1990s, he was host of the soccer program Tipsextra.

 - An incredible source of inspiration, positive and happy with a twinkle in her eye.

And quick in response, terribly quick in response, said friend and colleague Staffan Lindeborg after Ingvar's passing.

Ronnie Hellström, Soccer

Born:

21 February 1949, Malmö.


Died:

February 6, 2022,.

Ronnie Hellström is considered one of Sweden's best goalkeepers of all time.

He broke through in Hammarby, was awarded the golden ball twice and during the 1970s was one of the world's best goalkeepers.

When Sweden came fifth in the WC in 1974, Hellström was selected for the world team as the tournament's best goalkeeper.

He is the only foreign player to date to receive a farewell match in the German Bundesliga, after his years in the Kaiserslatuern.

- I have a book lying in front of me where it says that he was the world's best goalkeeper.

It was in connection with the World Cup in 1974. He was very good, said former teammate Roland Sandberg

Guy Lafleur, Ice Hockey

September 20, 1951, Quebec, Canada.


Died:

April 22, 2022, Montréal, Canada.

Guy Lafleur is described as one of the NHL's best players of all time.

In the second half of the 1970s, Lafleur had six straight seasons of 100+ points and helped win five Stanley Cup titles, including four straight (1976-79).

In all seasons with over 100 points, he scored more than 50 goals.

In 1,126 games for Montreal, the New York Rangers and the Quebec Nordiques, Guy Lafleur scored 560 goals and 1,353 points.

He has his number 10 retired on the roof of the Bell Center in Montreal.

Jan Lorentzon, Sports journalist

Born:

22 May 1940, Nyköping.


Death:

13 October 2022, Vimmerby.

Jan Lortenzon is one of SVT's most legendary sports reporters.

He commented on athletics, fencing and boxing, among other things, but is best known for his summaries of international football in Sportnytt and Sportspegeln.

- I took in both his nice person and his professionalism, where no task was too small to be done with full effort.

It is a part of SVT Sports' soul that is no longer with us, but which still lives on in everything he did for the editorial staff and for his colleagues, says André Pops about his old colleague.

Lennart "Liston" Söderberg, Football

7 July 1941, Torpshammar.


Death:

13 October 2022, Västerås.

"Liston" became best known as a football coach for Västerås SK, which he took up in the Allsvenskan on two occasions, in 1977 and 1996.

With his charismatic and outspoken style, he became a large and controversial profile in Football Sweden for several decades.

He is described as one of Sweden's angriest coaches of all time.

As a player, he represented AIK in the Allsvenskan and made one international appearance for Sweden.

Igor Sypniewski, Soccer

November 10, 1974, Łódź, Poland.


Died:

November 4, 2022, Łódź, Poland.

Igor Sypniewski did not play many years in Sweden, but managed to make a big impression.

He became a big profile and also often ended up in bad weather.

In 2003 he came to Halmstads BK and immediately became a big success.

After ten goals in 21 games, he left for Malmö FF.

He was seen as a great talent but neither in Malmö FF nor the next club address Trelleborg manages to perform at the same level.

He also played seven games for Bunkeflo in 2007.

Eila Nilsson, Swimming

Born:

20 November 1966, Norsjö.


Death:

19 September 2022, Skellefteå.

Eila Nilsson took double gold in swimming for the blind at the Olympics in Atlanta in 1996. She also has two European Championship golds and still holds the world record in 50 meter freestyle for the blind: 33.02 seconds.

Despite her visual impairment, she always had a positive outlook on life.

- Being blind is not a handicap.

It's just a matter of realizing it and finding new ideas to create a sensible everyday life, she once told Norran.

Jonny Nilsson, Skates

Born:

9 February 1943, Forshyttan.


Death:

22 June 2022, Hindås.

Jonny Nilsson won Olympic gold in the 10,000 meters in Innsbruck in 1964. The first WC gold came two years earlier when, as a 19-year-old, he took home the 10,000 meters in Moscow.

In total, there were six WC golds, the last in 1965.

- He is the greatest we have had in the sport, I think, said Tomas Gustafsson, who has three Olympic gold medals in skating, after the news of Nilsson's passing.

Ingemar Erlandsson, Soccer

Born:

16 November 1957, Glimåkra.


Died:

August 9, 2022.

Ingemar Erlandsson is an icon in Malmö FF.

He joined the club as an 18-year-old, and in total there were 473 games for the sky blue between the years 1976 and 1987. During that period, he won two SM golds and was part of bringing MFF to the European Cup final against Nottingham Forest in 1979.

He made 69 A international matches in the years 1978–1985 and played all of Sweden's matches in the World Cup in Argentina in 1978.

Arne Åhman, Athletics

Born:

4 February 1925, Nordingrå.


Death:

5 July 2022, Umeå.

Arne Åhman competed in the triple jump, long jump and high jump.

In 1948, he won Olympic gold in the triple jump in front of 80,000 people at the Empire Wembley Stadium in London, and is thus one of three Swedes to have won Olympic gold in the event, along with Gustaf "Topsy" Lindblom and Christian Olsson.

Åhman also has EC silver in the High Jump, EC bronze in the triple jump and several SC golds.

He lived to be 97 years old. 

Olle Goop, Trot

Born:

13 August 1943, Morarna.


Death:

April 20, 2022, Stora Kil.

Olle Goop is one of the trotting world's biggest profiles of all time.

During his career as a driver, he took 6,744 victories - as a trainer over 7,000. He was Sweden's winningest driver for a long time, a title his son Björn took from him in October 2018.

- Together with Stig H Johansson, he was one of the greats for such a long time.

There are so many who have been brought up in his school and worked with him and he has won all these big races.

He has touched many people.

The trotting world would have been much poorer if Olle Goop hadn't existed, said Anders Malmrot, Solvalla's sports director, after Olle's passing.

Kjell Andersson, Sports journalist

Born:

11 February 1949, Motala.


Death:

15 March 2022, Upplands-Bro.

Kjell Andersson started on TV sports, as SVT Sport was then called, in 1970 and worked as a reporter, presenter, commentator and manager until 2015.

That after 46 years in SVT's service.

- He has meant more to Swedish televised sports than he may have been given credit for.

He was in the background somehow, he never put himself in the foreground.

He kept a low profile, but at the same time was incredibly present and very important.

Kjell was a very talented TV person and sports person, but above all he was an important person on a human and personal level, says SVT Sports program manager Marie Lehmann.
