Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will go to the city of Santos (southeast) on Tuesday morning to pay a final tribute to the legend Pelé, the presidency announced on Monday.

Lula, sworn in as president on Sunday, will thus make the first trip of his term outside of Brasilia to go "to pay homage to Pelé", whose coffin is on display in the Santos stadium, "and in solidarity with his family, Tuesday at 9 a.m. ( local time)", specified the presidency.

A wake began Monday at 10 a.m. (local time) at the Santos FC club where Pelé wrote much of his caption.

Open to the public for 24 hours without interruption, it will end on Tuesday shortly after the passage of Lula.

Thousands of Brazilians, sometimes moved to tears, passed Monday in front of the coffin of Pelé, a true national monument, who died on September 29 of cancer in a hospital in Sao Paulo.

His funeral will take place after the wake, in strict family privacy, after a procession in the city of Santos.
