Former Dutch international Marc Overmars has been admitted to hospital after suffering a "mild stroke", Belgian club Royal Antwerp, of which the ex-winger is the sporting director, said on Friday.

The 49-year-old former Ajax Amsterdam, Arsenal and Barcelona forward 'did not feel well last night and was admitted to hospital with a mild stroke', the club said on his official Twitter account.

“Since then, Marc has been doing well, but will have to take it easy for a while.

Marc and his family are focused on his recovery and do not wish to comment further,” added the Belgian outfit, where the Dutchman has been sporting director since March.

Overmars had left Ajax in February after sending inappropriate messages and photos to female members of staff at the club.

Royal Antwerp appointed him a month later, saying they were giving him a "second chance".
