The sporting year was short for Alexia Putellas, who suffered a serious knee injury before this summer's EC finals.

But before that, she had been the protagonist of the Barcelona that took home the league title and made it all the way to the Champions League final.

Now she has been awarded the title of the world's best athlete.

This is after a poll by AIPS, where 420 journalists worldwide have voted, of which almost 12 percent voted for Putellas.

She tops the list ahead of American swimmer Katie Ledecky and Venezuelan triple jumper Yulimar Rojas.

No Swede has entered the list, which contains 30 names.

On the men's side, Lionel Messi was named the top athlete, followed by Swede Armand Duplantis.
