• 65 years and over Tráfico insists on shortening the license renewal period for the elderly

  • LEZ The cars that will not be able to circulate in the center of cities in 2023

You have probably already heard of V16 beacons.

You may even already have one of them and have even used it.

It is about those lights that will replace the emergency triangles when we are stopped on the road and that, since they can be placed without getting out of the car, prevent accidents that are more frequent than it seems.

Strictly speaking, both the beacon and the triangles are V16 signals, since this classification refers to the fact that they are "danger warning devices".

But one luminous and the other fixed

The 'landing' of the beacons occurred in the spring of last year, within Royal Decree 159/2021 that regulates emergency services on public roads.

Already then it was made clear that they would not be mandatory until 2026, although from July 2021 any driver can use them voluntarily.

And it was also established that they must be connected and geolocated, so that they automatically transmit the position of the vehicle to the DGT 3.0 platform when it works.

But as long as we activate it due to an incident, since this communication

is the only functionality that is supported.

No fines or real-time tracking

In other words, Traffic will never know where we are driving or at the speed at which we are going, since it does not allow monitoring in real mode.

Come on, just as it happens with the black boxes that all newly homologated cars must carry since last July.

The data they record can only be used, anonymously, for accident investigations.

In any case, and as the Royal Decree points out, this

geolocation "constitutes an extremely novel measure, unprecedented in terms of road safety in other countries."

Although the Government itself has recognized that this first legislation "contained some defects and emissions" that it was necessary to correct.

Those not connected will serve until 2026

Specifically, Royal Decree 159/2021 allows the use of up to 2,026 beacons that do not meet the connectivity requirements, provided they were manufactured prior to the publication of the standard.

Now, this last condition is eliminated, and all those companies that have developed V16 lights that are not connected, but that have been certified before March 2021,

will be able to continue manufacturing and selling them for the next three years.

And its use will be legal.

As of 2026 they will no longer serve.

The change has been introduced in Royal Decree 1030/2022, which modifies that of March 2021. It also tells companies how to achieve connectivity certification;

and that it must have an expiration date after which it may not work.

It must be specified.

Finally, and given the technological evolution that has occurred since work began on these devices in 2017,

those that are approved now must emit much brighter flashes.

Requirements

As for the requirements on geolocation, they remain unchanged.

This means that

the device will communicate, in any case, its activation and deactivation, as well as the position of the vehicle

.

But that information will stop being sent when it is turned off.

Secondly,

the cost of the communications will be included

in the sale price and these will be guaranteed for at least 12 years.

Finally, for its communications, the beacon must be self-sufficient and

cannot depend on external elements such

as mobile phones or applications .

On the other hand, and although it promised that it would be ready throughout this year,

the DGT has not yet drawn up the list of makes and models of the V16 beacon

that meet all the requirements.

When available, it can be consulted at www.dgt.es/v16.

As of today, that address does not exist
