The German swimmers missed a medal in the men's relay at the short course World Championships in Melbourne despite the German record in the 4x50 meter individual medley.

Ole Braunschweig, Lucas Matzerath, Marius Kusch and Josha Salchow finished sixth in the final on Saturday and stayed a hundredth of a second below the previous short course record from 2018 with a time of 1:31.79 minutes. Italy secured gold in a world record time (1: 29.72).

Also with German records, Anna Elendt and Angelina Köhler reached the final on their respective routes.

Elendt (Frankfurt) qualified seventh in the semifinals in 29.52 seconds over 50 meters breaststroke and improved the previous record from 2009 (29.55).

Köhler (Berlin) finished fourth in the semi-finals in 56.23 seconds over 100 meters butterfly, faster than the record time from 2015 (56.43).

Kusch (Essen) also reached the final over the same distance in fourth place (49.20).

Matzerath (Frankfurt), on the other hand, was already eliminated in 19th place after the heats over 50 meters breaststroke (26.67).

The finals take place on Sunday, the last day of competition.

With bronze, Elendt had won the only medal for the German Swimming Association (DSV) in Melbourne on Thursday over 100 meters breaststroke.

In total, the DSV is represented by eight athletes.

Open water Olympic champion Florian Wellbrock as well as Isabel Gose and Lukas Märtens (all from Magdeburg) are missing.
