England-France, this is what awaits the Blues for their quarter-final of the Football World Cup in Qatar, Saturday at 8 p.m.

An opposition full of rivalries and which has its nickname: the "crunch".

This term is also mainly used to evoke the Franco-English shock in rugby.

But then what is the origin of this word?

A "crunch" round ball version.

France will challenge England on Saturday evening at 8 p.m. in the quarter-finals of the World Cup in Qatar.

A match that will be live in full in

Europe 1 Sport

and which will have a certain flavor: that of the rivalry between the English and the French, especially known in the world of rugby.

This opposition also nicknamed the "crunch" has several origins.

By pure translation from English to French, this term means "cracking" or "screeching".

But it takes on a completely different meaning when we talk about a sporting encounter between the two nations.

In the British press

Historically, it would be the British press that would have made this term famous in the early 1980s. The newspaper

The Irish Times

would have used it in several of its articles to characterize the rugby matches between the XV of France and that of the XV of France. Pink.

Behind this word, the journalists hoped to increase the pressure on the two nations to give rise to a match rich in intensity.

The "crunch" is therefore used to evoke the fierce duel between England and France.

But other explanations on the origin of this expression circulate and in particular that of a match which would have taken place in 1906 in Paris, at the Parc des Princes, between the two countries.

It was then the match to determine the supremacy of the northern hemisphere.

Unfortunately, France is heavily beaten 35 to 8 by its neighbors.

Since this meeting, the opposition would have been decked out in this denomination that smells of gunpowder.

And even if historians clash on the exact date of the emergence of the term "crunch", the expression is now inscribed in stone for eternity.

And the rivalry too, which will be present on Saturday evening during the quarter-final of the 2022 World Cup between France and England.
