21-year-old striker Gonçalo Ramos had 33 minutes of national team football experience before the round of 16.

There he got the chance from the start, as national team captain Fernando Santos chose to bench Cristiano Ronaldo for tactical reasons and suspected conflict, and in the 50th minute of the game in the Portuguese national team shirt, he pushed 1-0 into the net against Switzerland.

A finish that measured a speed of over 60 kilometers per hour.

Before the half-time break at the Lusail Stadium, Portugal added – Pepe headed in 2–0.

The centre-back at 39 years and 283 days is now the second oldest goalscorer in World Cup history after Cameroon's Roger Milla – 42 years and 39 days young at the 1994 World Cup.

Completed hat tricks

In the second half, Portugal continued to overtake Switzerland - and Gonçalo Ramos' international breakthrough became increasingly clear.

First, he poked his second goal of the match after Diogo Dalot's cross.

And then when it was 4-1, the Benfica starlet completed his hat-trick when he was cool in a free with Yann Sommer - chipping in 5-1 to Portugal.

First Portuguese to score a hat-trick in a World Cup play-off match since Eusebio at the 1966 World Cup against North Korea.

A few minutes after that, Ramos was replaced, while Cristiano Ronaldo was replaced.

The 37-year-old had a finish in goal, but it was ruled out for offside.

Instead, another substitute, Rafael Leão, then established the crush.

Portugal won 6–1 and has now for the first time since 2006 advanced to the quarter-finals.

There awaits Morocco, who roared and knocked out Spain after penalty drama.
