The Netherlands emerged victorious in their World Cup group, while the United States finished second behind England.

They meant that the nations were pitted against each other in the round of 16.

The match started with a great chance for the USA, where star Christian Pulisic got free against the goalkeeper.

The defenders seemed to think that the American was offside, but it turned out not to be the case, and Andries Noppert had to show himself immediately with a sharp save.

Then it was the Netherlands who took the initiative in the match and after ten minutes they also took the lead.

After a well-composed attack, Denzel Dumfries found a diagonal back to Memphis Depay, who slotted the ball past Matt Turner with the wide side.

Before the first half was over, the lead was extended, with a similar goal.

Once again it was Dumfries who were behind the pass, this time to Danny Blind, who scored his third career goal.

Dumfries behind everything for the Netherlands

In the second half, the USA came into the match a bit more and when the clock ticked up to 76 there was also an equaliser.

Haji Wright missed a great chance and followed it up by making it 2-1 for the USA.

Pulisic hit a cross from the right and Wright got his foot on the ball which then bounced up and found its way into the far end of the goal.

But the Netherlands did not want to relinquish their place in the quarter-finals, extending their lead just five minutes later.

It was then the former assist maker, Dumfries, who was responsible for the goalscoring.

He was free in the far part of the penalty area after a cross from Blind, and hit the volley to make it 3-1.

That was also the final result, and the Netherlands are thus in the quarter-finals while the World Cup is over for the USA.

In the quarterfinals, the Netherlands face the winner of the match between Argentina and Australia.
