The former Secretary-General of the Public Authority for Sports, Sultan Saqr Al-Suwaidi, said that “increasing the number of Asian teams participating in the 2026 World Cup to eight makes the national team a great opportunity to qualify,” considering that “if it does not qualify, this means that it is in its worst condition.” .

He said that Qatar dazzled the world with the distinguished organization of the current World Cup, describing it as "the best World Cup in terms of organization so far."

He stressed that relying on national cadres to achieve any success or results is the most important lesson that must be learned from the Qatar World Cup, and that others should not be relied upon to achieve results or victory for them, pointing out that the national team qualified for the 1990 World Cup in Italy was 100% Emirati. , whether at the level of players or the administrative apparatus, calling for a restructuring of sports in the Emirates in general, and football in particular.

On the ability of Al-Abyad to achieve promotion to the next World Cup in 2026, Al-Suwaidi told Emirates Al-Youm: “The team is able to qualify and has a great chance, given that there are 42 teams participating, starting from the next tournament, while in the World Cup in Italy, for example, (Al-Abyad). He qualified and there were only two teams representing Asia, while the next tournament will witness the qualification of eight teams from Asia, and if the team cannot be number 7 or 8 in Asia, this means that it is in its worst condition.

early planning

Al-Suwaidi said that work on qualifying the national team for the World Cup should be through early planning that starts from now.

Al-Suwaidi stressed that he hopes for the sports sector to rise and represent the state well, indicating that he feels that there is a slack in sports institutions, pointing to the importance of benefiting from the cadres who have served in this sector for a long time, whether in clubs, federations, the authority or the Olympic Committee.

He said, "These cadres do not want positions or money, but rather want to present something through the juices of their expertise."

Al-Suwaidi indicated that he feels proud that he was responsible at that time in the General Authority for Sports, and also chaired the temporary committee of the Football Association during the period in which the team qualified for the 1990 World Cup in Italy, before a new Football Association board of directors was formed, stressing that he is not a stranger to the Federation. The ball, and noting that reaching the World Cup in Italy confirms that “any successful business must have a successful administration behind it.”

Distinguished organization

Al-Suwaidi explained: “I was in Qatar for 5 or 6 days, and I attended more than one match, and I closely lived the atmosphere of the event and the distinguished organization of the tournament in all aspects, whether in terms of reception or the availability of means of transportation and the proximity of the stadiums in which the matches are held to each other, as A person can attend four matches in the tournament on the same day due to the proximity of the stadiums, ease of transportation and good organization, and this has not happened and will not happen at the level of the World Cup tournament.

He said: «In my estimation, Qatar has succeeded in organizing a distinguished version of the World Cup, which is the best world championship organized so far, and I have previously attended more than one World Cup, but I did not see in it what is present in this current tournament held in Qatar, and this This places a burden on the countries that will organize the World Cup in the coming years.

Sultan Al-Suwaidi continued: “We are proud, as Arabs and Gulf nationals, of Qatar’s success in this mighty global effort in organizing the World Cup, just as the brothers in Qatar employed this event nationally, in the Gulf and in the Arab world, and it suffices that the opening ceremony included the national anthem of all Arab countries.”

Al-Suwaidi stressed that sports, art and culture bring people together and do not separate, pointing out that these things are present in the World Cup in Qatar.

Regarding the lessons learned from this World Cup, he stressed that «the first lesson from this event is that the tournament brought together the whole world, and Qatar and the region will benefit a lot from holding this event, whether in terms of media or the organizational work that was done in this regard».

And about the team he encourages in the World Cup, Al-Suwaidi affirmed that he is “emotionally with all the Arab teams, and happy with the historical victories that they achieved, as I tend to encourage the Brazilian team.”

And about his favorite star in the 2022 World Cup, the Swede confirmed that he does not have a favorite star, but rather loves teamwork, but this does not prevent the distinction of players, such as Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Sultan Al Suwaidi:

"I feel emotionally with all the Arab teams, and I also tend to encourage the Brazilian team."

I was in Qatar, attended more than one match, and lived closely with the atmosphere of the event and the distinguished organization of the tournament.
