The Tunisian national team bid farewell to the FIFA World Cup finals, which are currently being held in Qatar, despite its historic 1-0 victory yesterday over France (the world champion), in the third (last) round of the fourth group stage of the World Cup.

And the “Carthage Eagles” paid a dear price due to the sudden loss in the second round against Australia 0-1, which was one of the main reasons behind Tunisia’s disqualification, as well as the main reason that raised Australia’s shares and made it qualify, benefiting from its victory yesterday over Denmark 1-0.

And the Australian national team booked the second promotion ticket to the round of 16 for that group, accompanied by the French team, which qualified since the last round, after its unexpected victory over Denmark in the match that took place at the same time in the same group.

The Tunisian national team was required to beat France, pending the outcome of the other meeting between Australia and Denmark, in order to advance to the elimination rounds in the World Cup for the first time in its history.

Tunisia ranked third in the group standings with four points, two points behind France (leader), which outperformed Australia, second-placed, equal to it in the same balance, while Denmark remained at the bottom of the standings with one point. .

The Tunisian national team owes credit for achieving this historic victory to its veteran star Wahbi Khazri, who scored the only goal of the match in the 58th minute.

France scored a goal in the last minute of calculated time instead of lost by Antoine Griezmann, but the referee canceled the match for offside.

With this historic goal, Khazri shared the top scorer list of historical Arab players in the World Cup with the retired Saudi star Sami Al-Jaber, with three goals each.

Al-Khazari scored two goals in the last edition of the World Cup, which was held in Russia in 2018, against Belgium and Panama.

In its 18th meeting in the World Cup, the Tunisian national team, which participated in the World Cup for the sixth time in its history, achieved its third victory in the World Cup, compared to five draws and 10 defeats.

Tunisia stopped the series of not losing to France in the World Cup, after the (Roosters) team kept its record undefeated in its past nine matches in the World Cup.

France's last loss in the World Cup before yesterday's meeting dates back to the 2014 edition in Brazil, when it lost by the same result in the quarter-finals against Germany, which successfully paved its way to winning the title at the time.

• 43,000 spectators watched the Tunisia-France match at the Education City Stadium in Doha, most of them fans of the Tunisian national team.
