Qatar and Senegal were both coming off 2-0 defeats in the first group stage, against Ecuador and the Netherlands respectively.

There were thus two teams in need of a victory when the teams met on Friday afternoon.

From the start, it was Senegal who ran the match.

But the host nation stood low and closed many of the roads for the guests.

However, Senegal managed to break through the majority but without it paying dividends during the first half hour.

The biggest incident from Qatari eyes before the half-time break was a penalty situation, where Akram Afif fell when Ismaila Sarr was caught in the back.

But the referee did not award a penalty to Qatar, instead it was Senegal who took the lead soon after.

The goal came after a challenge in their own penalty area.

A cross landed towards Boualem Khouki, but he got the ball too far away from him.

Then Boulaye Dia appeared and quickly finished, which meant 1-0 to Senegal.

That was also the score when the teams went to the break.

In the second half, it didn't take long before the lead was extended.

It was on a corner that Famara Diedhiou got his head on the ball and he got real power on his header, which sent the ball past Qatar's goalkeeper into the goal.

Qatar then managed to create a couple of half-chances.

After a free kick near the penalty area, it became dangerous, when the ball landed at the feet of Abdelkarim Hasan Fadlalla.

But his shot was blocked by a teammate.

After just over an hour, however, Qatar's first shot on goal in the championship came but Edouard Mendy stretched out and put the ball off the post.

It was followed by a great chance for Qatar, where Mendy once again got to show off.

Ismael Mohammad got his knee on the ball after a cross and it was by far Qatar's sharpest chance so far in the World Cup.

But Qatar's dominance continued and Mohammed Muntari scored the team's first goal of the tournament.

He headed the ball out of Mendy's reach.

However, Senegal extended the lead just minutes later and the chance of scoring seemed far away for the host country.

3-1 was the final result in the match and Senegal has thus won its first victory in the championship.

In contrast, for Qatar, the road to advancement is now tough, with zero points after two of three group stage matches played.

Later on Friday, the Netherlands and Ecuador, who also belong to Group A, meet.
