Ecuador is asking its fans to avoid insulting World Cup chants

The Ecuadorian Football Association urged its fans on Thursday to avoid offensive chants after FIFA opened disciplinary measures over offensive chants made by a South American team's fans during their World Cup opening match against Qatar.

A part of the Ecuadorian fans chanted insults to the citizens of Chile in the match that took place on Sunday, perhaps in response to a claim made by the latter that Ecuador pushed a player who was not entitled to participate in the World Cup qualifiers.

The lawsuit cost Ecuador a fine and a points deduction in the qualifiers for the next edition of the tournament, but it avoided exclusion from the World Cup in Qatar.

"The Ecuadorean Football Federation calls on the Ecuadorean fans accompanying our national team in Qatar 2022 to avoid abusive, insulting and discriminatory chants," the federation said in a statement.

He added, "While our players do their best inside the green rectangle, let us do our part outside it. Let's enjoy this football party with joy and respect."
