Big star Alphonso Davies was in a superb position to give Canada a dream start in the country's first World Cup appearance in 36 years, after just eleven minutes.

But the Bayern Munich player could not outwit Thibaut Courtois from the penalty spot.

Canada then continued to create several quality scoring chances and would have had two more penalties, according to Jonas Eriksson in SVT's WC studio.

"A breakdown"

Among other things, a situation where a Canadian gets stamped on the foot.

- This is a half that is anything but good from the referee.

There are three mistakes, of which VAR only corrected one.

For me it is a failure of Fifa, of the VAR protocol.

As a judge, it is crystal clear to me, says Eriksson, referring to the second missed penalty.

- Absolutely, I can't understand why they don't take it, adds Albin Ekdal.

Jonas Eriksson believes that mistakes can be costly, not only for Canada but also for referee Janny Sikazwe and his team.

- For the referee, it is probably the last match he plays.

Fifa are quite clear and merciless, if you don't perform according to their requirements, you don't get to judge anymore.

Canada's Alphonso Davies agrees with Eriksson's criticism.

- Some verdicts could have gone our way, but it's not something we can do anything about, he says to SVT Sport.
