Never before has a woman been refereed in the men's World Cup in soccer.

But now 92 years of waiting is over.

Because when Mexico-Poland was kicked off, France's star referee Stéphanie Frappart was there as the fourth referee.

The International Football Association Fifa announced last spring that Frappart, Salima Mukansanga, Rwanda, and Yoshimi Yamashita, Japan, will referee the World Cup.

- This emphasizes that for us it is about quality and not gender, said the chairman of the judges' committee Pierluigi Collina in May.

Frappart made history last year when she officiated in both the men's EC playoffs and the Champions League.
