The World Cup in football, which kicked off this weekend, has received harsh criticism.

The reason is, among other things, the host country Qatar's view on LGBTQ rights.

For example, it is illegal to be homosexual.

At the same time, football icon David Beckham is an ambassador for the World Cup, something he has been criticized for.

One of the more notable protests is the British comedian Joe Lycett.

On Sunday, he uploaded a video to Twitter in which, wearing a shirt with Pride colors, he appears to drive 10,000 pounds into a wood chipper.

10,000 pounds is roughly 126,000 kroner.

Symbolizing Beckham's millions

The sum symbolizes the 10 million pounds that David Beckham is said to have received to be an ambassador for the World Cup.

It is illegal to destroy money in Britain, but Joe Lycett says he "gets away easier" than if he had been gay in Doha, according to ITV.

Lycett had previously promised to destroy the money unless Beckham renounced his mission as World Cup ambassador by Sunday at the latest, which Beckham did not do.

"It's not just the money that has been shredded, but your status as a gay icon," writes Joe Lycett on the site benderslikebeckham.com.
