The historic decision was hammered out by the International Skiing and Snowboarding Federation (FIS) this spring, and means that from this season onwards, there will be the same distances for women and men.

The World Cup doesn't start until next week in Ruka, Finland, but the Swedish riders will get a first taste of the new system already this weekend.

During the Swedish premiere in Bruksvallarna, women and men run exactly the same distances: sprint on Friday, 10 kilometers on Saturday and 15 kilometers on Sunday.

One who has long requested the change is Frida Karlsson.

- It's cool, isn't it?

It is historic, says Karlsson.

- It's natural really, this has only stuck because we started that way.

But there is no other reason for it.

It's not that we can't drive the same as the guys.

In all other sports it is the same, you play 90 minutes of football and you run 10,000 meters on a track.

"Too opportunistic"

Others are more skeptical.

Specifically endurance skiers such as Jens Burman have, for example, expressed themselves negatively about the men going down from 15 to 10 kilometers.

Something that national team manager Anders Byström understands.

- Sure, the ladies get to ride five miles this winter, in Holmenkollen, and a lot of focus is put on that.

But if you look at the whole season, the greatest impact will be on the men.

It is clear that many who want to go a little further think this is stupid.

Because it will be too haphazard and too short competitions, says Byström.

Karlsson will not start

Frida Karlsson believes she can draw personal benefits from the distance reform.

- Yes, five miles I think suits me.

That is probably the biggest difference.

Then there's probably only one of those this winter.

But there will be different distances.

20 kilometers is still longer than 15, which we have run in the skiathlon, so it will be good, says Karlsson.

The 2022–23 World Cup winter will serve as the evaluation season for the new distances.

However, Frida Karlsson, who finished third in Friday's sprint, will not be at the start of the 10 kilometers in Bruksvallarna on Saturday.

- She will not start tomorrow, but it was planned to run for two days, says mother Mia Karlsson to SVT Sport.
