FC Nantes was sanctioned with the closure of the Loire stand at the Beaujoire stadium during the match against Juventus Turin in the Europa League play-off return on February 23, UEFA announced on Tuesday.

The decision follows the use of pyrotechnic devices during the Europa League match against Qarabag on October 27.

The European football body sanctions the club for the use of fireworks and smoke bombs by its supporters from the Loire stand, before the kick-off of the Europa League group match against Qarabag, October 27, 2022, where the Canaries won 2-1.

In addition to the partial closure of its stadium, FC Nantes was fined 42,000 euros from UEFA: 30,000 euros for the use of fireworks and smoke and 12,000 euros for the obstruction of public walkways.

6,000 supporters less

The people of Nantes, who will face one of the heavyweights of European football for a place in the round of 16, will therefore have to do so, at home, without the 6,000 supporters that the Loire stand can accommodate.

The Canaries had finished second in their group in the group stage which ensured them of being drafted to face a club eliminated from the Champions League and returned to the Europa League.

The first leg against Juventus will take place on February 16 in Turin.
