The English League Cup.. Big surprises and the exit of the "Capital Five"

Five runners-up Chelsea, Arsenal, fourth, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham and Crystal Palace were eliminated yesterday from the third round of the League Cup, while Northern Irish goalkeeper Kaumhin Kelleher saved his Liverpool team from losing the title.

Chelsea bid farewell to the competition, which lost its final match last year to Liverpool 10-11 on penalties, by falling to its host Manchester City 0-2.

The London club held out throughout the first half before conceding two goals in five minutes when Algerian international Riyad Mahrez shook it with a direct free kick from outside the area (53), and the Argentine Julian Alvares added the second, taking advantage of a rebound from Senegalese international goalkeeper Edouard Mendy after a strong shot by Mahrez. (58).


Manchester City played the match in the absence of its most prominent stars, led by Norwegian international top scorer Erling Haaland and Belgian international playmaker Kevin De Bruyne, while midfielder Calvin Phillips returned after recovering from a shoulder injury he suffered last September and subsequently underwent surgery.

And Phillips entered in the 50th minute, the place of Spaniard Rodri.

Arsenal was no better than its neighbor Chelsea, and bid farewell to the competition early, losing to its guest Brighton 1-3.


Spanish coach Mikel Arteta's men were quick to score through Eddie Nketiah in the 20th minute, but Brighton turned the table with three, equalizing through former Manchester United and Gunners striker Danny Welbeck (27 from a penalty kick), then advanced by Japan's Kaoru Mituma (58) and Ghanaian Tariq Lamptey (71).

And the Northern Irish goalkeeper Kaumhin Kelleher imposed himself as a star in the match of his defending team Liverpool against its guest, Derby County of the Championship, and led it to a 3-2 win on penalties, after the original time ended in a goalless draw.

Kelleher starred by saving three penalties to his compatriot Conor Horihan, Scotsman Forsyth and Louis Dubin.

Liverpool missed two kicks, the first by Spanish defender Stefan Paisic and the second by Brazilian striker Roberto Firmino, while Alexander Oxlade-Chamberlain, Uruguayan Darwin Nunes and Harvey Elliott scored for him.

And the German coach of Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp, made a backup lineup. Joe Gomez and the Greek Konstantinos Tsimikas were the only ones from his starting lineup, before he pushed Firmino, Elliot and Nunes in the 66th minute, to return and involve the Portuguese Fabio Carvalho in the 74th minute without succeeding in shaking the guest net.

Wolverhampton qualified by defeating Leeds United 1-0, and Southampton over Sheffield Wednesday from the Championship 2-1.

The third round concludes Thursday with Manchester United's meeting with Aston Villa.

Leicester City, Bournemouth, Burnley, Lincoln City, Charlton Athletic, Melton Keynes Dons and Gillingham booked their tickets on Tuesday.
