England star confirms he will miss the World Cup due to a knee injury

England right-back Reece James confirmed today that he will miss the World Cup in Qatar due to a knee injury, which has limited coach Gareth Southgate's options in defence.

Chelsea's James had booked his place on the right side of England's defensive quintet, but a knee injury on October 11, against AC Milan, left him out for eight weeks.

Chelsea coach Graham Potter told a news conference yesterday that James was only participating in light training.

James, 22, who has 15 caps, said he was "shocked" to be missing from Southgate's 26-man squad for the tournament, which is due to be announced on Thursday.

"Immediately after my knee injury, I knew that the recovery time before the World Cup would be very short, but I always hoped to join the squad. I worked hard more than ever to give myself the best chance to participate in the World Cup and I was confident in my ability to help the team."

He continued, "I appreciate the nature of the risk but I wanted very much to participate. I wish my teammates good luck. I will be back soon. Greetings and kisses to all of you."

Manchester City center back and right-back Kyle Walker has not played since October after undergoing hip surgery, while midfielder Calvin Phillips is racing to catch up with the tournament.

On the left side, James' team-mate at Chelsea, Ben Chilwell, will not take part in the tournament after injuring his hamstring last week.

James' injury increased the possibility of including Trent Alexander-Arnold, despite his fluctuating level with Liverpool, while Newcastle's Kieran Trippier is also in the right-back position.

England start their World Cup campaign against Iran on November 21.
