Arresting a referee from here and replaying a match from there, and between them there are endless rumors that the Egyptians are spreading to this day on social media, the source of which is a heartbreak for the hopes that were dashed by the “Pharaohs” team entering the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, but luck was Senegalese.

From Italy, the Egyptian “hadith” began. Many people may think that the first World Cup “Pharaohs” began in 1990, but the year 1934 was the first relief, from Abdel Rahman Fawzy’s double, passing through the goal of Magdy Abdel Ghani, down to the shoulder of Mohamed Salah.

The Egyptians opened the era of Arabs and Africans in the World Cup when they participated in the year 1934 in Italy in the second edition of the largest football event, and then qualified at the expense of Palestine.

Because the tournament at the time was a knockout system, the Egyptian ships did not sail long in the sea of competitions, so they bid farewell to the first fight against Hungary when they lost 2-4.

At that time, Abdel Rahman Fawzy scored two goals for Egypt, one of which was to force a 2-2 draw in the first half before losing in the second.

These two goals remained orphaned in the historical records of Egypt until the sons of the Nile returned to the World Cup from the Italian gate again in 1990.

The draw did not serve Egypt at the time, and in its first matches, the Netherlands faced the European champions with their arsenal of stars, such as Marco van Basten, Ruud Gullit and Frank Rijkaard.

Schubert's mistake and change of law

The Egyptian defense was stubborn, behind goalkeeper Ahmed Schubert in front of the orange tide, so that the first half ended without goals, but the substitute, Wim Kaift, surprised them with the goal of advancing half an hour before the end of time.

The Pharaohs did not give up, they pressed goalkeeper Hans van Broeklin, then defender Ronald Koeman dropped striker Hossam Hassan, causing a penalty kick translated by Magdy Abdel Ghani 7 minutes before the end of the original time in Palermo.

After they scored a valuable point from the Dutch stars, coach Mahmoud El-Gohary's men faced the Republic of Ireland 5 days later in Palermo, which was described as a boring match because of the sterile passes between the defenders and the goalkeeper, especially Schubert, and it was one of the reasons for changing the laws of the game and preventing the guards from capturing the passes of their defenders.

After two draws, reaching the second round became realistic for Egypt, but England stopped its ambitions in Cagliari, and under English control, the Egyptians defended and postponed the decision to the second half when Schubert made a mistake by dealing with a header by defender Mark Wright.

The attempts of Gamal Abdel Hamid and his companions against Peter Shelton's goal did not bear fruit, so Egypt came out of the first round with two draws and a loss.

With the goal against the Netherlands, Abdel-Ghani became a teammate of Fawzy with the World Cup goals for Egypt, and he remained 28 years old.

Abdel-Ghani, the former Al-Ahly player and the Egyptian national team, says, “The moment the penalty kick was calculated, I went to pick up the ball in order to shoot it, and I was waiting for any colleague to ask for the ball, no one asked for it.”

He added, "I felt that I carried the dreams of 75 million Egyptians on my back, and that goal moved the Egyptian national team to a second place."

Abdel-Ghani confirms, "I lived on this goal for 28 years, the star of Egypt's stars, as I was the last to score a goal for the Pharaohs in the World Cup."

Who scored the goal?

Abdel-Ghani hit the Dutch goal, and during the joy of the players, the match director's camera went to Adel Abdel-Rahman, and some thought that he was the one who scored the goal, and some journalists even asked him to make statements after the match.

Abdel Rahman, the former Al-Ahly player and the Egyptian national team, says that the coincidence of the goal was the coincidence of his joining the national team in 1990.

He added that after the participation of Egypt's "reserve" team in the African Nations that was held in Algeria in 1990, based on the decision of El-Gohary to rest the first team before the World Cup, "I found a message waiting for me at Cairo airport from Mahmoud Al-Says, Al-Ahly's coach."

That message was to call him up for the first time, 6 months before the start of the World Cup.

Abdel Rahman sacrificed two professional offers from the Belgian clubs Royal Antwerp and Standard League, because Al-Ahly president Mohamed Abdo Saleh refused to transfer him, explaining that he would play in the World Cup and his professional chances would be better, and he had that imaginary goal.

Salah ends the legend

A goal carried by Liverpool player Mohamed Salah on his shoulder with the hopes and wishes of millions of Egyptians.

Before the 2018 World Cup, specifically on May 26, Salah suffered a severe shoulder injury in the Champions League final between Liverpool and Real Madrid, which is a sprain of the acromioclavicular joint after an intervention from Sergio Ramos.

The best African player and the best player in the English Premier League at the time were absent from the stadiums, and the son of Gharbia Governorate did not participate in his country's last friendlies before the World Cup.

After arriving at the national team camp in Grozny, he missed the first day of training, and also missed the first match that the Egyptian team lost to Uruguay 0-1, and returned to Russia, the owner of the land.

Despite Salah's return, the "Pharaohs" lost their focus and made mistakes and were three times behind, before the Liverpool star scored an honorary goal from a penalty kick.

With this goal, the name Abdel-Ghani returned to the tongues of the Egyptians. With a mixture of irony and sarcasm, Abdel-Ghani showered the Egyptians with his phrase, "Beware, forget about Gon (don't forget the goal) Magdy Abdel-Ghani" against the Netherlands.

Egyptian comedian Mohamed Henedy commented, tweeting before the Russia match, "Lord, we are successful, if not because the 100 million is left for Captain Magdy Abdel Ghani, because our generation lived for 28 years, the generation of the nineties, and he is humiliated every day and every hour by the captain."

Egypt ended its World Cup campaign with a new loss against Saudi Arabia 1-2 in a match in which its goalkeeper Essam El-Hadary became the oldest player to participate in the history of the World Cup at 45 years and 161 days.
