Malin Baryard Johnsson and Peder Fredricson have won double gold in team jumping in recent years.

First the Olympic gold in Tokyo 2021, then the WC gold in Herning 2022. Add there Fredricson's individual Olympic silver and world number one Henrik von Eckermann's WC gold.

Sweden has grown into a super nation and power factor in international show jumping.

- I think we have become this good thanks to taking care of the horses the way we do.

So we don't need to change that much, we show the rest of the world that healthy horses perform, says Malin Baryard Johnsson to SVT Sport.

Fredricson: "Increasing our responsibility"

Peder Fredricson believes that the many blue and yellow successes have now increased Sweden's responsibility when it comes to the issue of horse welfare.

- Yes, I would say that it does.

It increases our responsibility and also our opportunity to influence, which I see as very positive.

Both Fredricson and Baryard believe that Sweden is at the forefront of horse welfare.

- I think we are very good, many of us at the top come from riding schools - we have learned from the ground up.

We in Sweden have a great knowledge of horses.

I also think that we have all understood for a long time that the better the horse feels, the better it performs, says Baryard Johnsson.

But there is still a lot of work to be done.

That's what Göran Dalin, chairman of the Horse Welfare Council at the Swedish Equestrian Federation, thinks.

Among other things, a large training effort is now being carried out around what the association calls "the five domains": the horse's behavior, health and nutrition, the environment the horse lives in and the horse's mental health.

- Horses should not be stressed and sick because we do not meet these basic needs, says Dalin.

"Can work with zero vision"

At the same time, Dalin believes, it is not possible to make equestrian sports completely risk-free for the horses.

- We can reduce the risk of injury, we can improve horse welfare very much.

But we cannot absolutely guarantee that horses will not get hurt.

We can work with a zero vision, that you move towards a goal.

But just like zero vision when it comes to traffic accidents, we will never achieve absolute zero cases of insufficient horse welfare.

Looking at international championships, what is most important there and then to achieve this zero vision?

- Well-prepared riders, well-trained horses, reasonable demands on the competition track, competent officials who make sure to support and stop horses and equipment that are not working as they should.

A big job left to do: "Will never achieve absolute zero cases of inadequate horse welfare"

Baryard: "Watch out"

What can you as individual riders do to improve the horses' welfare?

- Showcase how we treat our horses and how we take care of them.

Also make sure when you're away, if you see something that's not good enough - that you actually mention it to the referee who can change it, says Baryard Johnsson.
