A month ago, Varberg looked like they had the Allsvenskan place as if in a small box, but then the losses started piling up while Degerfors picked up point after point.

A development which meant that Varberg was in a precarious position before today's meeting with Sirius.

A victory was a must at the same time that Degerfors was not allowed to pick up points in their away match against Malmö.

Varberg did his part

And Varberg did his part.

Alexander Johansson sent in 1-0 after a quarter and before the first half was over, Anton Liljebäck had scored twice again and put a solid hold on the match.

In other words, their fate was in Malmö FF's hands when the second half started.

At the Eleda Stadium, the score was 1-1 at half-time after Hugo Larsson gave MFF the lead in the 18th minute and Omar Faraj equalized 20 minutes later.

A quarter into the second half, Malmö took the lead again, this time through Isaac Kiese Thelin, but Malmö/Varberg's joy was short-lived as Rasmus Örqvist equalized just three minutes later.

The ending a shudder

The ending was a shocker.

With only minutes left to play, Malmö got a really good free-kick opportunity two meters outside Degerfors' penalty area, but Anders Christiansen's finish went high over the crossbar and Degerfors managed to keep it out.

Now Öster awaits in an uncertain qualifier for Varberg.
