VfL Wolfsburg has extended its winning streak in the Bundesliga to six games without a defeat and has initially moved out of the relegation zone.

Lower Saxony won 3-0 (1-0) at FSV Mainz 05 on Saturday and climbed to eleventh place in the table with 17 points, at least overnight.

Patrick Wimmer (33rd minute), Maximilian Arnold (70th) and former Mainz player Ridle Baku (84th) scored the goals in front of 26,750 spectators for Wolfsburg, who were just one point behind Mainz.

Mainz coach Bo Svensson made two changes to his team after the 6-2 defeat at Bayern Munich.

Dominik Kohr was preferred to Leandro Barreiro in midfield, while Marcus Ingvartsen replaced Jonathan Burkardt up front.

From the start, the home side were willing to make forget the weak performance in Munich.

They started powerfully, went about their work aggressively in duels and pushed Wolfsburg back into their own half.

The guests only reacted, but initially could hardly free themselves from the pressure from Mainz.

Aaron (9th) had the first opportunity, but his shot was blocked.

Six minutes later, Silvan Widmer received a free-standing pass in the penalty area, but the Mainz captain didn't capitalize on the opportunity.

The guests, who played very cautiously, came close to the Mainz goal for the first time after 18 minutes.

But Felix Nmecha's pass to his brother Lukas was too imprecise.

After that, VfL keeper Koen Casteels was the focus again.

With strong saves against Ingvartsen and Kohr he kept his box clean.

VfL were lucky when Kohr shot another shot from 20 meters at the post.

The opening goal fell out of nowhere.

After a corner, Wimmer was free in the penalty area and completed with a low shot.

Mainz goalkeeper Robin Zentner had no chance.

As a result, the Rheinhessen played a little more cautiously forward.

Wolfsburg mostly resorted to counterattacking.

After the restart, Mainz initially had more time in the game, without becoming mandatory in front of the opposing goal.

Wolfsburg waited and narrowed the spaces.

Ingvartsen (58th) almost managed to equalize, but again a Wolfsburg defender got in the way.

In return, Felix Nmecha hit the crossbar with a brilliant shot.

Edimilson Fernandes then had the best opportunity for Mainz, but the defender narrowly missed after a corner.

As in the first round, Wolfsburg was more efficient.

With Arnold's free kick from almost 30 meters, Zentner misjudged and let the fluttering ball pass.

With that the game was decided.

Overall, the Lower Saxony showed the more mature game system and seemed more mellow.

Mainz showed a lot of commitment, but did not reward themselves with inaccuracies in the last passes.
