Nine Allsvenskan clubs jointly oppose the introduction of VAR and it is an issue that affects football Sweden.

For the European football association Uefa, on the other hand, it is obvious to have VAR in their competitive matches, just like in a clear majority of the European leagues.

For Swedish referees, it may therefore be tougher to referee in Europe in the future if the system is not introduced in Allsvenskan.

- The biggest problem is not for the clubs, but for the Swedish referees to judge in Europe.

Because when it comes to European games, there is a huge difference between a referee who officiates with VAR on a daily basis in the domestic league and one who doesn't.

It gets confusing, says Theodoridis to SVT Sport and continues:

- You have good referees in Sweden, but the question is how many will be suitable to referee in Europe in the future if they don't do it with VAR at home?

For the clubs there is no big difference, but for the referees it is more complicated.

"Great responsibility"

Will Uefa make any demands on the Swedish confederation to join VAR?

- No... We had a similar discussion with Elfsborg and artificial grass many years ago.

If it is approved by the domestic association and it meets certain criteria, then we hand over a lot of responsibility to the domestic leagues to decide what suits their country best.

When SVT Sport asks the question about VAR to Uefa's head of referees Roberto Rosetti, however, he defends Swedish referees.

- We have supported many Swedish referees with VAR training, including Andreas Ekberg, Glenn Nyberg and Mohammed Al-Hakim.

We want to use judges from all over Europe, that is important to us.

What is your feeling when it comes to Swedish football and WHERE?

- I think Sweden will join soon, I hope so.

For the sake of the Swedish judges.

VAR is an excellent support for football and for referees to make correct and accurate decisions.

At the same time, it is an independent decision that the Swedish confederation and the league must make, says Rosetti.
