One day after the acclaimed move into the round of 16 in the Champions League, the RB Leipzig striker's World Cup dreams were shattered.

National soccer player Timo Werner is out of action for the tournament in Qatar, which begins in three weeks, due to a ruptured syndesmosis ligament in his left ankle.

As his club announced on Thursday, Werner will not be able to play until the end of the year due to the injury.

The treatment method will be decided in the next few days.

"It's hard for me to take," wrote the 26-year-old Werner on Twitter: "I'll be out for the next few weeks, I'll miss the World Cup and unfortunately I'll have to support @RBLeipzig and @DFB_Team from the couch." the native of Stuttgart for the many get well wishes he quickly received.

National coach Hansi Flick got in touch – and regretted the failure.

"This news is very sad.

I'm very sorry for Timo personally because he misses the World Cup, which he really wanted to play," he said in a statement distributed by the German Football Association.

"Timo's failure is also a bitter loss for the team," said Flick: "We all wish him that he gets fit again quickly."

Werner was fouled by Taras Stepanenko in the 14th minute of the 4-0 win against Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday and had to be replaced a few minutes later.

The club first said that the injury might not be serious.

Werner underwent another examination in Leipzig on Thursday, which revealed the severity of the injury.

After two rather disappointing years at Chelsea, Werner returned to Leipzig in the summer.

National coach Flick welcomed the transfer.

Most recently, he had defended the attacker against criticism.

“Timo Werner is always viewed very critically.

He has scored one of the most goals in recent games.

If Miro Klose had done that earlier, everyone would have been thrilled,” said the national coach on the MagentaTV internet channel.

Werner found his form again in the past few weeks.

Three goals in the last three league games and goals in the Champions League at Celtic Glasgow and against Real Madrid not only made the player happy, but also Flick, who was not blessed with many strikers.

With Werner's exit, Bremen's Niclas Füllkrug could have a better chance of participating in Qatar.

With nine goals, he is the best striker in the Bundesliga.

Flick has nominated his squad for the World Cup finals in the Gulf Emirates and the last international match before the tournament begins on November 16 in Muscat against Oman next Thursday in Frankfurt am Main.
