This week, nine Allsvenskan clubs sent a letter to the Swedish Football Association (SvFF) where they argued that VAR should not be introduced in Sweden.

But for Uefa it goes without saying with VAR and the general secretary Theodore Theodoridis says today to SVT Sport that it can disadvantage Swedish referees that the system does not exist in Swedish football.

- You have good referees in Sweden, but the question is how many will be suitable to referee in Europe in the future if they don't do it with VAR at home?

he says.

"Will not be as attractive"

Martin Ingvarsson, elite referee coach at SvFF, agrees.

- It is a danger.

If our judges in Sweden are not allowed to compete on the same terms as other judges in Europe, there will be problems, partly with the elite judges we have now but also with the new recruitment, he says in SVT's Morgonstudion.

- All of Europe has adopted this, even the second division in Poland uses VAR.

We should be where everyone else is, plus the judges in Sweden get a challenge.

Otherwise, they will not be as attractive to referee big matches.

Otherwise, the risk is that they lose interest and want to judge in other countries where they have VAR.

Supporters critical

Kalle Strandberg, chairman of the supporters' association Bajen Fans, is, on the other hand, worried about what an introduction would lead to.

- We believe that it detracts from the experience.

Football is a lot of emotions, both as a player but above all as a supporter.

The experience of bursting into laughter or tears is a big part of the experience.

We believe that VAR takes the edge off these feelings if you have to wait a while, someone has to watch TV and then it becomes "yes" or "no", he says.

Ingvarsson does not think that the experience for the supporters is affected by VAR.

- It's a bit of a myth.

Once every three matches there is an intervention by VAR, they have counted on 800 matches worldwide.

It takes a minute longer when you have VAR than when you don't.

And the "childhood diseases" are starting to disappear so it will go faster, he says.

SvFF is investigating the matter and, according to Karl-Erik Nilsson, a possible introduction could take place in 2024 at the earliest.
