The city of Marseille is a candidate to welcome the Olympic flame in France, on its arrival from Greece, and to inaugurate its relay route to Paris for the 2024 Olympics, announced the deputy mayor Samia Ghali to the city council on Friday.



"We are candidates for the arrival of the flame in Marseille", explained Samia Ghali, member of the left-wing majority on the municipal council, stressing that she was "at work" so that the flame "comes from Olympia to Marseille" , thus showing that the Phocaean city, founded by Greek colonists around the 6th century BC, is “the gateway to France”.

An important date for Marseille

“On the occasion of the Paris 2024 Games, the torch relay will take place over three months”, starting in April, and “will visit all regions of France”, is it indicated on the Paris Olympics website. .

If most of the Olympic events will take place in Paris and Ile-de-France, the sailing events will take place in Marseille, while Châteauroux should host those of shooting and Lille the playoffs of basketball.

Football will also be played in several cities, including Marseille, and the surfing events will take place in Tahiti.

The hosting of the Games will be "an important date for the city of Marseille", insisted Samia Ghali, who presented to the vote a framework agreement on the organization and the facilities necessary for this reception, in particular on the marina, with the objective to "ensure that the people of Marseille are not disturbed in their daily lives".
