Since Tomas Axnér and Johanna Wiberg took over the Swedish women's national handball team two years ago, they have placed great emphasis on developing the team's physique and transition game.

Among other things, it has resulted in a fine fourth place at the 2021 Olympics and a fifth place at the World Cup that same year.

But in order to take the next step and seriously fight for medals, one detail above all needs to be improved: the attacking play set up.

Something that Axnér and Wiberg have made sure to file ahead of the EC, which starts on Friday.

Starts the EC against Serbia

- That particular part is something concrete that we have to sharpen for the championship.

When we face a defensive game that stands very low on us and hugs our middle sixes, there we have to find several solutions.

Both for shooting and several solutions for finding our middle sixes, says assistant national team captain Johanna Wiberg.

Sweden opens the EC against Serbia on 4/11 and then meets the home nation Slovenia on 6/11 and Denmark on 8/11.

In a possible main round, where two semi-final places are up for grabs, teams like Norway and Hungary are probably waiting.

- There will be tough matches, but I think a key is that we have a little more variety and opportunities in our attacking game, says Axnér.

The firepower has been lacking

Axnér thinks that Sweden has good breakthrough players at nine meters, but has previously lacked shooting power from outside.

But that is something that is in this year's EC squad, says the national team captain.

- We have played a game where we have been very straight.

And players who can dissolve a low defence, who close the possibility of a breakthrough, are after all players who are dangerous in the air, he says.

- And there I think we have variety with Melissa (Petrén), Kristin (Thorleifsdóttir) and Tyra (Axnér).

Players that make it very difficult for defenses to stand flat on us, which we noticed after the Olympics that we got a little bit of a look at.

I want to have as many different small knives, scissors and nail bits as possible on one and the same knife.

We must have broad competence in the squad.

The last time Sweden's handball ladies won a championship medal was EC bronze in 2014.
