The European Football Union UEFA will introduce the Nations League as a comprehensive competition for all member countries in autumn 2023 in women's football.

This is also linked to a new qualification mode for the European and World Championships for women soccer players.

In the future there will be two linked phases, the Nations League and the European Qualifiers, which will build on each other and both will be held in a league format.

This was announced by UEFA on Thursday in Nyon.

The venue for the next European Championship in 2025 has not yet been decided, but Germany has also applied together with the Netherlands and Belgium for the 2027 World Cup.

After the conclusion of the Nations League phase, the four best teams will contest the Nations League final phase in the future, and after the conclusion of the European Qualifiers, final round playoffs will be held to determine the last EM participants.

After the European Championships in England, "it is now time to develop women's national team football," said UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin.

"We have created an open, competitive and continuous system where every game counts and which is a true reflection of the European sporting model." The change follows a recommendation from the UEFA Women's Football Committee.

The Nations League has existed for men since 2018.

In the Nations League final phase, the European participants for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris will also be determined for women: These are host France and the two finalists or the third-placed team if the French are in the final.

So far, the three best European teams have been allowed to attend the summer games at a World Cup.
