In Qatar there is no "real" women's league and the women's national team, which has not played an official international match since 2014, is no longer included in the Fifa world rankings.

One person who is very critical of the way the World Cup host country handles football for girls and women is Monika Staab, the German who was the national team captain the last time Qatar's national team appeared in a competition context.

- It is a shame that the association does not give women's football the attention that the women actually want.

It's not much to ask.

"Want to give the girls the opportunity"

Staab says, in an interview that German ARD did in collaboration with SVT Sport, Norwegian NRK and Danish DR, that during her time in Qatar she tried to build women's football from scratch.

- We were out in the schools and tried to create a broad foundation, as we still do in Saudi Arabia (where she is now the national team captain, editor's note).

We collaborate with schools and teachers.

We want to give the girls the opportunity to play football at school.

It is important that broad sports are promoted so that you can then find the talents and support them, she says, and continues:

- The work has collapsed and does not exist in Qatar today.

- It is a shame that the development work that I started has not continued.

SVT Sport, together with ARD, NRK and DR, for six months searched for both Fifa, Qatar's football association, other managers and players - but no one wants, or is allowed, to answer our questions.
