Thanks to a last-minute goal by Waldemar Anton, VfB Stuttgart managed their second win of the season in the Bundesliga and collected important points in the fight against relegation.

The Swabians defeated FC Augsburg 2-1 (1-1) in an entertaining game on Saturday.

Defense chief Anton scored in injury time and rewarded VfB's furious final sprint.

Florian Niederlechner gave the guests the lead in the fourth minute after a mistake by the Stuttgart defense, and Serhou Guirassy equalized in the meantime (15').

The Augsburgers remained without a win in their fifth competitive game and are still in the lower middle of the table.

Just like midfielder Enzo Millot, the Stuttgart team also missed defender Konstantinos Mavropanos with muscular problems.

Michael Wimmer had criticized his team's defensive performance after the 0:5 debacle in Dortmund last week.

In his fourth game as VfB interim coach, he now relied on a back four for the first time in defence.

But even that seemed anything but safe in front of 46,400 spectators – including former national coach Joachim Löw – in the first half.

VfB Stuttgart turns the game

Sometimes the Swabians defended Augsburg's long and high balls really badly at first - especially when it was 0-1.

Dan-Axel Zagadou, who also acted erratically a couple of times afterwards, let Niederlechner boil him off and Augsburg's striker scored a lob over VfB goalkeeper Florian Müller to give the visitors the lead.

The goal was prepared by Augsburg's full-back Fredrik Jensen, who replaced the suspended Iago.

Again, Stuttgart had conceded an early goal: a permanent problem for VfB this season.

Up front, however, the hosts, who were undeterred by the rapid deficit, also had a few chances.

Guirassy used one of several good crosses from Borna Sosa to equalize with a header after 15 minutes.

Just before the break, Silas Katompa Mvumpa missed Stuttgart's great opportunity to take the lead.

At the beginning of the second half, Augsburg, where Ruben Vargas had to be substituted in his 100th Bundesliga game (25th), had slightly longer periods of possession.

Stuttgart's Sosa got the ball in his own penalty area from a short distance, but FCA rightly didn't take a penalty.

VfB didn't achieve anything offensively for a long time.

In the last 20 minutes, however, the hosts increased again enormously.

First, captain Wataru Endo missed two huge chances – Augsburg's Niederlechner (69th/70th) saved both times.

Then Stuttgart striker Guirassy missed twice (75th/76th).

Luca Pfeiffer also hit the bar with his head (86').

In the first minute of added time, Anton redeemed VfB with the winning goal.
