In early November 2009, forward Phil Kessel began his mighty streak.

Since then, the American has started 990 straight games in the NHL.

The last one was last night.

He then broke the previous record, held by Keith Yandle, of 989 consecutive starts.

- I have always said that I like to play.

I try to play no matter what.

I still think it's fun and will continue as long as I can, says Kessel about the record.

"Special evening"

Kessel plays for the Vegas Golden Kings.

His record game ended in a 4–2 win against the San Jose Sharks.

In fact, it was Kessel who started the scoring.

The 35-year-old's goal was his 400th in his career.

- I've been playing for a while, but this is obviously a special night for me, says Kessel.
