It was at the beginning of October that world number nine Simona Halep was caught in a doping test that showed traces of the substance roxadustat, which stimulates the production of red blood cells.

Later, the B sample also showed positive.

Halep herself, who was previously world number one, has since the news claimed her innocence.

"I will fight to the end and prove that I have never taken a banned substance and I believe that the truth will come out sooner or later".

Her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, initially did not comment on the doping test but has now posted a text on his social media.

- First, I just want to tell you how much of a shock it has been for our team since Simona informed me about the positive doping test from the US Open.

I have worked with hundreds of athletes in my thirty years as a coach and I have never been in a situation like this before, writes Halep's coach Patrick Mouratoglou in a longer post.

Mouratoglou is a French tennis coach and commentator who currently has Simona Halep and the Dane Holger Rune as his mentors.

He also coached Serena Williams for ten years from 2012-2022.
