Rory McIlroy capped his return to the top spot in the world rankings on Sunday with an explosive game that earned him victory in the CJ Cup in South Carolina.

With five holes remaining, the Northern Irishman was on the same number of strokes as Kurt Kitayama from the USA.

Then McIlroy picked out his best swings and delivered three birdies in a row.

The fact that he finished with two bogeys played less of a role in the context.

The victory figures for the round were written at -4 in 67 strokes, one stroke better than the American.

The win means McIlroy, who finished at -17 with a 267 stroke total, has won 23 times on the PGA Tour and 31 times overall.

He can now also boast of having reached the top of the world rankings nine times.

At that point, only Tiger Woods and Greg Norman, with eleven first-place finishes each, can beat him.
