Ribéry is best known for his time at German giants Bayern Munich where he spent twelve seasons and won nine league titles and one Champions League.

The three-legged midfielder was also an important part of the French national team that lost the World Cup final against Italy in 2006. And it is precisely in Italy that Ribéry's journey ends, aged 39.

The last few seasons have been spent in Salernitana where a troublesome knee injury now puts an end to continued play.

"The ball stops here.

But not the feelings inside me.

Thanks to everyone for this wonderful adventure," he writes on Twitter.

There doesn't seem to be any longer break from football as the Serie A club says it wants to offer Ribéry a coaching role.

- We will give him a role, what he wants, when he wants and how he wants.

Franck is wonderful both on and off the field.

He can get the best out of everyone and is a leader, says Salernitana owner Danilo Iervolino

Salernitana is twelfth in Serie A. Franck Ribéry, who has also represented teams such as Galatasaray, Marseille and Fiorentina, made 24 appearances for the club.

He was noted for 81 caps for France.
