His Highness Sheikh Khalid bin Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, member of the Executive Council of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and head of the Abu Dhabi Executive Office, met with Adam Silver, commissioner of the National Basketball Association, prior to the UAE capital hosting the NBA Games Abu Dhabi 2022 at Al Ittihad Arena on Yas Island This is within the framework of a multi-year strategic partnership between the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi and the Association.
His Highness attended a training session in which he met the players of the Milwaukee Bucks team, which won the NBA title last year for the first time in 50 years, in preparation for facing the Atlanta Hawks in the two expected matches. His Highness was accompanied during this visit by the Head of the Department of Culture and Tourism. Abu Dhabi, Muhammad Khalifa Al Mubarak, the department’s agent, Saud Al Hosani, the director general of tourism in the department, Saleh Al Jaziri, and the co-owner of the Milwaukee Bucks team, Mark Lasry.
Abu Dhabi will host the preliminary matches of the NBA for the first time in the Arab Gulf region, in order to enhance its position as a leading destination for tourism and the organization of international sporting events.
It is noteworthy that the strategic partnership between the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi and the National Basketball Association, witnessed the launch of the Junior NBA Abu Dhabi Basketball League last February, with the participation of 450 male and female students ranging in age from 11 to 14 years from 30 schools in the capital. It also includes organizing an esports competition (NBA 2K), and launching sessions of the fitness consulting platform “NBA Fit” to raise awareness of the importance of exercising and adopting healthy lifestyles.
The department has also become, through its "Visit Abu Dhabi" promotional initiative, the tourism destination and the official partner of the association in the Middle East, North Africa, Europe and China.
