The lawyer Michael Kukulies-Smith then requested a postponement for Kyrgios' condition to be established.
The Australian 27-year-old himself is not present during the trial, but is in Japan to play the tennis tournament in Tokyo.
The incident is said to have taken place in December last year and if Kyrgios is convicted, he risks up to two years in prison.
A new trial date is set for February 3.
