Kenyan Amos Kipruto secured victory in the London Marathon on his debut.

The 30-year-old third-placed in the 2019 World Championships beat Ethiopian Leul Gebresilase and Bashir Abdi from Belgium over the 42.195-kilometer route in 2:04:39 hours on Sunday.

Yalemzerf Yehualaw was crowned the youngest winner in the history of the event in only her second marathon race.

The 23-year-old Ethiopian stumbled over a bump six kilometers from the finish, but caught up with the leading group again and crossed the finish line in the clear lead after 2:17:25 hours.

It was the third fastest time ever run in the British capital.

Defending champion Joyciline Jepkosgei from Kenya was second.

Third place went to Alemu Megertu from Ethiopia.

Yehualaw had reached the goal in her marathon debut in Hamburg in April in a world-class time of 2:17:23 hours, staying well below the course record of her compatriot Meselech Melkamu of 2:21:55 hours from 2016.

It was the fastest marathon debut ever, as the London organizers announced on Sunday.

In total, more than 40,000 runners took part in London.

The races took place in October for the third and last time this year after it was postponed in 2020 due to the corona pandemic.

Next year they are to take place again on their traditional date in April.
