Brittney Griner in prison

The fate of their teammate Brittney Griner, who was imprisoned in Russia, weighed heavily on the basketball players.

"It's on the team's mind every day.

It's hard, it's really hard," head coach Cheryl Reeve said before the World Cup.

Her players could have emailed Griner to me, sending her "messages of affection, support and strength."

"We're trying to stay strong for her and we're doing what we can," promised Reeve, who described Griner as a "gentle soul filled with love."

Griner is "such a big part of our lives, it's a challenge." Griner's number 15 jersey was not worn by any US player in Sydney.

"It's the first way to honor her and keep her in our thoughts," Reeve said.

Before the final, Australia secured bronze in the small final against Canada with a 95:65 (51:43).

Lauren Jackson, who set the record with her 43rd World Cup appearance, was the hosts' top scorer with 30 points.
