The international anti-doping organization Wada has decided that marijuana remains a prohibited substance, with the justification that it is "contrary to the spirit of sport".

Wada was asked to review THC's doping status after US sprinter Sha'Carri Richardson was banned from the Tokyo Olympics last year.

She served a one-month suspension after testing positive at the U.S. Championships, which she won.

The championship also served as the USA's Olympic selection.

The sprinter then said she had smoked marijuana to cope with her mother's death.

Athletes who use cannabis were consulted by experts.

Wada also notes that the threshold for THC positive is high.

THC-positive tests in connection with competitions, but not training, may therefore continue to lead to suspensions.

WADA has also decided that the opiate tramadol is prohibited, in connection with competitions, from January 2024.

Tramadol, which is a pain reliever, has been a problem in cycling.

That led to the opiate being banned in the sport since 2019.
