Norwegian

Tobias Foss

broke all predictions and won the gold medal at the World Time Trial Championship in Wollongong (Australia) on Sunday.

The Jumbo team rider surprised the specialists on a flat course of 34.2 kilometers.

The second place went to the Swiss

Stefan Kung

and the third to the Belgian

Remco Evenepoel

(winner of the last edition of the Vuelta a España).

The World Championship took place on a 17.1-kilometre circuit that was completed twice.

The profile, with slight slopes along wide avenues with numerous curves and roundabouts, was a test for strong runners, with powerful pedaling, like Foss, the time trial champion of his country for the last two years.

The 25-year-old runner used a time of 40 minutes and two seconds.

Kung did two seconds more and Evenepoel, nine seconds more.

Fourth was the British

Ethan Hayter

, 39 seconds behind, who was left out of the medals due to a mechanical failure.

In the last section of the time trial the chain came off and he lost more than half a minute.

The big loser was the Italian Filippo Ganna, who was looking for his third consecutive title and finished seventh, 55 seconds behind Foss.

He even posted a worse time than the Slovenian

Tadej Pogacar

, sixth, at 48 seconds.

The Spanish

Oier Lazkano

signed a discreet time trial and finished in 26th place.

In the female category, the Dutch

Ellen van Dijk

prevailed , with a time of 44.28.

The silver went to the Australian

Grace Brown

, 12 seconds behind.

The bronze was obtained by the Swiss

Marlen Reusser

, at 41 seconds.

The best ranked Spaniard was

Sandra Alonso

, in 31st place, 6 minutes and 20 seconds behind.

Lourdes Oyarbide

was 32nd, at 6.22.
