Nicola Spirig's career is over: "Could enjoy"

The 40-year-old Swiss Nicola Spirig has a long and successful career behind her.

His track record includes six EC gold medals between 2009 and 2018.

But she is most remembered for her Olympic gold from 2012. That is when she won, after goal photo review and great drama, by just two nine thousandths against Sweden's Lisa Nordén.

Finished with a half marathon

Now, just over ten years later, the elite career is over.

The last competition took place yesterday, when she came second in the Greifensselauf half-marathon competition.

She finished second, six seconds behind the Ethiopian Mengiste Serkalem Mekonnen, in a time of 1.15.14.

- I have had a fantastic career with many successes.

But now I can stop and have a life after my career, which I'm really looking forward to, she says to the newspaper Zürich Schaffhausen.
