Vladimir Putin is currently in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, where the summit of the Asian Cooperation Organization, SCO, is taking place.

There he meets leaders such as China's Xi Jinping, Iran's Ebrahim Raisi and Turkey's Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and the meeting is described as an opportunity for the Russian president to show that the country is not completely isolated from the world.

Can face China and India

According to Reuters, Putin has opened up that the SCO, which includes major nations such as China and India, should consider organizing sports competitions in the future.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has advised the Olympic sports to suspend Russian and Belarusian athletes from international competition, which most sports have heeded.

Russia has also previously opened up to organizing its own championships.

Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko told the Russian news agency Interfax earlier in September that Putin had on many occasions raised the athletes' dilemma of not being allowed to train at foreign facilities and not be allowed to compete.

- The president has raised the need for an increased number of domestic competitions, with participation from other friendly countries.

The active need to compete, no elite athletes can just train, it's impossible, Chernyshenko said.
